WHO’s Emergencies director, Dr Mike Ryan says Covid-19 ‘may never go away’. World may have to learn to live with it, like it adapted to live with HIV. He said, “It is important to put this on the table – this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,”
He added, “HIV has not gone away but we have come to terms with the virus, we have found therapies and we have found the prevention methods and people don’t feel as scared as they did before,”
Not only Dr Ryan, but Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also formerly claimed that COVID-19 will result in changing some aspects of everyday life forever.
Meanwhile UN warned of pandemic resulting in widespread distress and mental ill health. Coronavirus outbreak resulted in major global mental health crisis, UN called for urgent action to address this issue.
Devora Kestel, head of the World Health Organization’s mental health, said, “We know that the current situations, the fear and uncertainty, the economic turmoil — they all cause or could cause psychological distress,”
Although worldwide one of the largest global vaccine trials are going on. More than 100 potential vaccines are at different stages of development. Ryan also said that even if a vaccine is found, the process of eradicating the disease would require massive efforts.
