USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced that USB4 will be making its debut within the next few months. USB-IF has unveiled its specifications and declared that USB4 would be built on Intel’s Thunderbolt 3.
In layman’s terms, this is going to improve our dongle life and make downloads times faster. USB4 is going to double the bandwidth of USB and it will enable multiple simultaneous display and data protocols.
USB 4 supports an array of new specs and features over prior versions of USB:
- The next generation USB4 specification will deliver data transfer speeds of up to 40GBps connecting a pair of compatible devices.
- USB4 will be compatible with Thunderbolt 3 devices.
- Better resource allocation for videos in case you are using USB 4 port for both video and data at the same time.
- USB 4 will only operate using Type-C connector.
Brad Saunders, USB Promoter Group Chairman, said, “The primary goal of USB is to deliver the best user experience combining data, display and power delivery over a user-friendly and robust cable and connector solution. The USB4 solution specifically tailors bus operation to further enhance this experience by optimizing the blend of data and display over a single connection and enabling the further doubling of performance.”
