In a major step toward cleaner oceans and industrial practices, scientists in China have developed a groundbreaking sponge derived from moss that offers an eco-friendly and highly efficient method to tackle oil spills. Published in the journal Scientific Reports, this innovative material boasts a 90% reusability rate, presenting a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional oil absorbents.

Nature-Inspired Innovation with Surface Modification

This study used natural porous sphagnum moss as a raw material to develop a novel, economical, efficient, and easily recoverable adsorbent via surface modification. The researchers transformed the moss into a sponge-like material that selectively absorbs oil while repelling water. The surface modification enhances its hydrophobic and oleophilic properties, enabling it to efficiently soak up oil without water saturation.
