Researchers are developing an innovative, eco-friendly alternative to traditional glass windows using natural materials such as wood, rice, and egg whites. Their goal is to create a biodegradable and sustainable option for applications like windows and electronic screens.

Development Process

The team begins by removing lignin and hemicellulose from balsa wood, which leaves behind a porous cellulose structure. They then infuse this structure with a mixture of egg whites and rice extract. The idea draws inspiration from ancient construction techniques in Assam, India, where builders have used similar mixtures for centuries to create durable structures. The result is a flexible, durable, semi-transparent wood with a subtle brownish tint.

Advantages Over Traditional Materials

Transparent wood offers several advantages over glass:

  • Energy Efficiency: In experiments, researchers found that structures with transparent wood windows maintained cooler interior temperatures compared to those with glass windows. This shows the material’s superior insulation properties.
  • Environmental Impact: Because this material is biodegradable, it reduces pollution and waste far more effectively than plastics.
  • Durability and Safety: Transparent wood doesn’t shatter like glass. Instead, it bends or splinters, making it safer in various applications.

Potential Applications

Researchers envision a wide range of uses for transparent wood:

  • Electronics: By embedding tiny silver wires, they enabled the wood to conduct electricity. This could make it useful for smartphone screens and wearable tech.
  • Solar Panels: Thanks to its optical properties, transparent wood might improve the efficiency and sustainability of solar panels.

This exciting research, presented at the ACS Spring 2025 Meeting, showcases how sustainable design can literally reshape the windows through which we see the world.
