Creating New Opportunities with Open Data
As is the case with many large cities, the amount of information that needs to be managed is absolutely mind-boggling. To make matters worse, the existence of scores of incompatible legacy systems and a flood of new information from the fledgling Internet of Things (IoT) makes Open Data Plans essential.
New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics (MODA) recently issued its annual update to its Open Data Plan. The NYC Open Data Portal currently has over 1,500 data sets in the following categories: business, city government, education, environment, health, housing & development, public safety, recreation, social services, transportation, and big apps. Anyone can use the data for whatever purpose they want.
Open Data Isn’t Cut & Dry with Respect to Privacy
New York City’s Open Data Plan has recently sought to standardize geospatial data, streamline practices, and comply with the new open data law. The main goal of the open data program is to increase transparency that will allow businesses, government, and citizens to improve city services.
As expected, the collection of vast amounts of information rubs some people and businesses the wrong way. For example, New York City recently issued subpoenas and gag orders to tech companies as it sought to collect data associated with telephone numbers, web browsing history, and stored data including tracking cookies. Tech companies, as Apple has shown, want to protect the privacy of their customers and so the back-and-forth over privacy and access to critical information continues.
The following video shows how New York City uses open data, big data, and analytics to help small businesses.
