With the growing population, worldwide consumption of meat is placing a huge strain on the environment. Lab-grown meat is poised to revolutionize the global meat industry in the future.
This cultured meat is produced in bioreactors and is cleaner and more environmentally friendly. It is just like real meat, but it can be obtained without the need for animal slaughter. So it has been approved for sale by a regulatory authority for the first time.
Breakthrough for the global food industry
The lab-grown chicken will soon be available in Singapore after gaining regulatory approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). US start-up ‘Eat Just’ meat is going to produce cell-cultured chicken under Eat Just’s new GOOD Meat brand. They will do it via partnerships with local manufacturers.
Eat Just’s chief executive officer Josh Tetrick said, “Singapore has long been a leader in innovation of all kinds, from information technology to biologics to now leading the world in building a healthier, safer food system.”
Singapore imports more than 90% of its foodstuff, it was badly impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. So the government is working on an initiative, called “30 by 30”. This initiative hopes to locally produce 30% of the country’s food supply by 2030.
Tetrick added, “Working in partnership with the broader agriculture sector and forward-thinking policymakers, companies like ours can help meet the increased demand for animal protein as our population climbs to 9.7 billion by 2050,”
