According to automobile historians, it has taken approximately 100,000 patents and hundreds of inventors to create the modern automobile circa 2010. But the current rate of innovation suggests a new era of driverless vehicles and flying cars will be a fresh chapter in the history of transportation.
A New Era of Automobile Innovation
When looking at any history of innovation, one would be hard pressed to find one better than that of Mercedes-Benz. In its “Leading Through History” presentation at MBUSA, the history of Mercedes-Benz is traced back to 1886 and German patent number 37435, a three wheeled, self-propelled “motorwagen.” Moving to today, Mercedes-Benz is on the cusp of supplying “the most intelligent production vehicle ever made. With technologies no car has ever offered, the 2017 E-Class writes a new chapter in the story of driving: Where cars can talk to each other, and look out for you, like no other car on the road.” Mercedes-Benz has always been known for its safety, design, performance, and environment, and its newest vehicles are futuristic. Mercedes-Benz may not invent all of the new patents that will be widely adopted by car manufacturers in coming decades, but it will, more often than not, provide the best version.
All automobile manufacturers are being innovative because of the pressing need for green cars that will contribute to sustainable development. At one point, it seemed that automobiles were stuck in the 1970s or 1980s but external developments forced innovation on the industry which has continued apace since. Today, without a doubt, the most sophisticated technology owned by consumers is their automobiles.
Some of the innovative technologies include anti-collision systems, hybridization of new models, new smart, multi-purpose steering wheels, advanced touch displays, massage seats, safety features integrated into dashboards, augmented reality that provides information on windshields, hydrogen-powered fuel cells, driverless concept cars, cars that automatically parallel park, and autopilot systems.
