Climate change is even worse than we thought. The negative impacts of climate change are rising much faster than scientists predicted less than a decade ago.
According to the new research, titled “Greenland Ice Sheet Climate Disequilibrium and Committed Sea-Level Rise” published in Nature Climate Change, over 120 trillion tons of the Greenland ice sheet is doomed to melt. Scientists foresee that it will result in the rise of global sea levels by at least 10.6 ″ (27 cm). However, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) earlier predicted that climate change could cause 2”-5” of sea-level rise by 2100.
Study co-author William Colgan referred to these chunks of frozen ice sheets as “doomed ice” and “zombie ice”
He said that this zombie ice is going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet. He explained that it will go to the ocean even if the whole world stops burning fossil fuels. Greenland Ice Sheet is going to lose about 110 quadrillion tonnes of ice to the ocean.
Professor Jason Box, who led the study, said, “It is a very conservative rock-bottom minimum. Realistically, we will see this figure more than double within this century. In the foreseeable scenario that global warming will only continue, the contribution of the Greenland Ice Sheet to sea level rise will only continue increasing,”
