Daily, we read about different gadgets and appliances that can help in energy conservation. Now energy can also be conserved through furniture. Designers Raphaël Ménard and Jean-Sébastien Lagrange have created Zero Energy Furniture.
The first design in the series is a table that is made up from solid oak and corrugated anodized aluminum. This incredible design was presented at the 2015 Milan Design Expo.
This table can absorb and release thermal energy depending on the temperature of the room. It absorbs heat as the temperature in the room exceeds 22 degrees Celsius and also releases the heat once the temperature drops below 22 degrees.
The science behind the table: Phase Change Material (PCM) wax is used between its solid wood surface and its anodized aluminum underside. When the temperature exceeds 22 degree Celsius, the wax melts and absorbs heat from the surrounding room. On the other hand, when the temperature drops, this wax solidifies and gives off heat back into the room.
