Did you know that water bottle waste takes over 1,000 years to biodegrade and, if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes? Plastic water bottles are one of the main sources of pollution and it’s very difficult to put the brakes on the momentum of this waste.
Considering the environmental cost of the massive consumption of bottled water, a team of U.K.-based design students invented an innovative edible water bottle called Ooho. This bottle is biodegradable and can be eaten or safely thrown away. This remarkable design received a 2014 Lexus Design Award.
How the Ooho globule is made
This globule is made through a process called spherification (a technique that shapes liquid into spheres). The Ooho globule is actually a membrane that encapsulates water like a bladder. The membrane is made up from brown algae and calcium chloride and is edible, hygienic and biodegradable.
While the package is being formed, water is frozen into ice before being encapsulated. This not only simplifies the process but also prevents the water from mixing with the membrane ingredients.
The Ooho globule is not only simple and environmentally friendly but is also incredibly cheap.
