Chain drive is widely used in bicycles and motorcycles, to transfer power to the wheels. These chains transmit the power of pedaling to the rear wheel.
But sometimes, these chains could be inconvenient when the chains get tangled. Tangled bike chains are a common occurrence among bikers. You need to remove the pulley, rotate the inner cage plate to free the chain, untangle the chain and sometimes even replace the chain.
What if you have a bicycle without a chain, that performs just like the usual one?
You can see one such bicycle in action in the below video by a creative YouTube channel- The Q, The YouTuber is famous for many interesting projects like building airless tires or removing the entire hub from the bicycle. Here he shows that how he managed a drive shaft instead of a chain to transmit power from the pedals to the wheel.
Although, it’s not the first time that someone removed the chain from a bicycle. Shaft drives were introduced over a century ago, but they got ousted by chain-driven bicycles. Recently, modern shaft-driven bicycles have been re-introduced after some advancements in internal gear technology.
The below video will give you a good look into the DIY process on how to make a shaft-driven bicycle. So, gear up and enjoy!
