The BBC is reporting that Belgium is reviewing a proposal that would see its government distribute iodine pills across the entire country as a safety precaution in the event of a nuclear disaster.
According to Belgium’s health minister, if the proposal is approved, the iodine pills would be given out to the approximately 11 million people living in the country.
The new safety measures come as a result of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear meltdown and the ongoing problems associated with it.
Iodine pills, which can aid in blocking the absorption of some radioactive material, would be distributed next year if the plan goes through.
