Volkswagen is expanding the ID family with the all-new fully-electric ID. Aero. The new elegant luxury sedan will initially be available on the Chinese market. This will be the first electric limousine from the brand and will be digitally presented on Monday, 27 June. The spacious 4-door model is characterized by impressive aerodynamic features, guaranteeing as much range as possible with reduced energy consumption.
This addition to VW’s ID family will be a rival for the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The ID. Aero positions itself in the upper-middle class and as an equivalent successor to the VW Passat, which was a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. The dimensions will likely match with the Passat’s but still offer more space. Volkswagen will use the same Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MED) platform, and customers will be able to choose from the rear or all-wheel-drive powertrains. The battery capacity is expected to be 82 kWh, which would result in a 435 mi (700 km) range (WLTP). The electric motors will probably be the same as the ones on the other ID family vehicles. The choice will likely be a 128 kW (174 hp) and 150 kW (204 hp) rear-wheel drive. As for the design, the coupe-style limousine will feature a swooping roofline and horizontal LED taillights.
The sale for the Chinese market is expected to begin in the second half of 2023, while the corresponding version for the European and the North American market is expected to be presented in 2023, and will be built in the Volkswagen plant in Emden, Germany. Also expected is a GTX performance version with a powerful dual-motor setup later on. This version will be able to accelerate the elegant sedan from 0-62mph (0-100 km/h) in only 5.6sec.
Other details will be revealed on the digital debut on Monday, 27 June.
