Amazon has announced that it is supporting the construction and operation of an 80 megawatt solar farm in Virginia, as the company plans to eventually utilize the power for its data centers and operate them solely on renewable energy.
The solar farm reportedly can generate enough power support 15,000 US homes each year and Amazon expects it to be fully operational by October 2016.
Being built by Community Energy, it is still unknown the exact amount of energy that will be used by Amazon, who most certainly is using the 80 megawatt solar farm to catch up with rivals Apple and Facebook, who are already way ahead when it comes to switching to renewable energy.
At the moment, Amazon is also contributing to the construction of a 150 megawatt farm in Indiana, which is set to come online in January 2016.
