Real-world testing of self-driving cars is going on across the world, conducted by a wide variety of companies ranging from Uber to Tesla. And then there’s Alphabet’s Waymo.
Waymo is racking up the autonomous miles fast, recently hitting 4 million on public roads. All those miles add up to a bright future for self-driving vehicles.
So what’s the point of these cars getting so much driving experience?
Waymo’s autonomous systems learn from a combination of experience on public roads and testing on the company’s private track, literally accounting for thousands upon thousands of potential scenarios the self-driving cars might encounter in real-life situations.
Ultimately, the more miles these vehicles rack up the closer we are to self-driving taxis hitting a city near you.
