Singapore has just added another jewel to its crown: the Parkroyal on Pickering” located adjacent to the Central Business District, Chinatown and Clark Quay and facing Hong Lim Park. Parkroyal now has 12 hotels worldwide.
This project has attracted accolades from the World Architecture News (WAN) which just declared it co-winner of “hotel of the year.” The primary reason for the award is “Parkroyal on Pickering’s” integration of plant life into the very structure and design of the building.
Three glass towers (see slide show) are fused by stepped layers of curved terraces. Hanging plants and vertical gardens present a stunning view from outside which is re-created on the inside. A 15,000 m² sky garden connects the three towers and contains a large swimming pool for guests.
The hotel harvests its own rainwater, powers its lights with solar energy cells, and is for all intents and purposes a sustainable building. Massive open-air corridors with windows and energy efficient lighting have reduced energy costs by 20%.
