JR West Introduces Blade-Proof Umbrellas for Enhanced Safety
In a proactive effort to enhance passenger safety, West Japan Railway Co (JR West) has taken a significant step by equipping its trains with blade-proof umbrellas. These specialized umbrellas, designed to withstand sharp objects, provide an additional layer of protection in the event of an attack. This innovative measure comes in response to growing concerns about safety in public transportation systems worldwide. By investing in such safety features, JR West demonstrates its commitment to offering a secure and comfortable travel experience for its passengers.
“The protective shields that have been deployed until now were close-range and heavy,” JR West President Kazuaki Hasegawa told reporters. “We have devised a shield that is easy for female employees to use. In the event of an emergency, we want the crew to respond and ensure passengers evacuate safely.”
Durable and User-Friendly
Each umbrella measures around one meter in length and expands to a diameter of 1.1 meters when opened. Constructed from a material highly resistant to blade penetration, it weighs just 700 grams—about the same as three or four smartphones. The umbrella also features a meshed fabric that allows the user to maintain visual contact with an attacker while staying protected.
Commitment to Passenger Safety
The decision to equip trains with blade-proof umbrellas is a testament to JR West’s dedication to passenger safety. These specialized umbrellas provide an additional line of defense, offering passengers reassurance during their journeys.
