A team at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has developed a novel design. This design significantly prolongs the operational lifespan of the plasma torch, extending it from mere days to several years. Applications of Long-Lasting Plasma Torches
Plasma torches are crucial for precise cutting, using gases like argon and hydrogen to produce high-temperature plasma, the fourth state of matter ideal for cutting electrically conductive materials.
Despite their utility, the limited lifespan of plasma torches, due to traditional fixed cathodes that require replacement upon depletion, has impeded their widespread adoption, leading to high maintenance costs and short lifespans.
Continuous-Feed Cathode Systems
Led by Zhao Peng, a team at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science has developed a continuous-feed cathode system to address cathode depletion in plasma torches. This innovation could eliminate lifespan limitations, offering virtually limitless operational longevity for the plasma flame. This significantly reduces maintenance costs and downtime associated with conventional plasma torches.
