The new eActros is the longest-range electric truck with a 40-tonnes capacity. The new model was revealed by Mercedes-Benz trucks, a brand from Daimler Trucks, that represents leadership in the electrification of the trucking industry. Previously, Mercedes-Benz announced the eActros LongHaul for the first time in 2020, and last week more details and specs were revealed. The truck was officially presented at the 2022 IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany.
Mercedes-Benz estimates around 311 mi (500 km) of range on a single charge. The power bank is made using lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cell batteries, with an expectation of a long life of over 10 years and 750,000 mi (1.2M km) of driving. The LFP chemistry technology is very new on the market. It does not feature a high energy density, but can last for 10,000 cycles.
As reported by Mercedes, the trucks will be able to withstand charging from stations with an output of around 1 MW, which can charge the battery pack from 20 to 80% in under 30 minutes. As a result, Daimler Trucks together with Volvo Group and Traton Group is developing a $593M public network infrastructure in Europe exclusively for charging trucks.
The vehicles will be assembled at Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ manufacturing facility in the Wörth truck assembly line. The official mass production is planned for 2024, while prototypes are currently being tested, and in 2023 the test phase will move to real-world usage conditions.
Apart from the eActros LongHaul, the company also revealed a new version of the eActros 300 models, that features three 112 kWh battery packs which will be enough for 137 mi (220 km) of driving and will be available starting from the second half of 2023.
Daimler is estimating a total of 60% of its trucks sold in Europe by 2030 to be without any emissions. However, trucks powered by natural gas are not a technology that Daimler wants to improve, as the company does not find relying on any fossil fuels as a strategy for the future.
