Scientists have long been working on developing technology to power devices wirelessly. Our laptops, smartphones can start getting charged as soon as we walk into a room. There won’t be a need for charging cables tethered to power outlets.
Recently some awesome advances have been made to bring this technology closer to reality
A team of researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of Tokyo has invented a system that can safely deliver electricity through the air. The technology could potentially create wireless charging zones in a building.
The team successfully demonstrated the technology in a purpose-built 10’x10’ aluminum test room. Delivering power using only magnetic fields…lamps, fans, and cell phones in the room were powered wirelessly.
The team delivered at least 50 watts of power without surpassing guidelines for electromagnetic energy exposure set by the Federal Communications Commission. No cables were used, the devices got charged regardless of the placement in the room.
Tech beyond everyday electronics
The technology could also be used for implanted medical devices like heart implants that require a wire to connect to an external power source. So, by using the wireless charging technology, any risk of infection could be eliminated, improving patients’ quality of life.
