Solar-Powered Refrigerated Trailers Could Greatly Reduce CO2 Emissions

Today, we just need to head down to the supermarket and purchase a vast array of foods from all over the world. But these luxuries come at a great environmental cost.

This food is transported using refrigerated trucks that rely on diesel engines to power the air conditioning units. These trucks burn about a gallon of diesel per hour.  As a result, over 22 pounds of CO2 is released into the atmosphere.

According to XL Fleet, which makes “electrification solutions for commercial and municipal fleets,” over 50,000 refrigerated trailers are sold every year in US. So, new trailers along with hundreds of thousands already in service results in huge amount of carbon emissions.

To address the concern, XL Fleet is partnering with eNow

eNow is a provider of solar and battery systems for electric Transport Refrigeration Units (eTRUs). New battery system from their collaboration will help in reducing carbon emissions.  These new batteries largely power the refrigerators and utilities like air conditioning using solar power.

“This partnership will change the way the transportation industry thinks about energy and refrigerated transportation,” said Jeff Flath, President and CEO at eNow, “[and it will help] to eliminate a major source of diesel fuel consumption and emissions for fleets.”
