In coming future, there will be no need to maintain blood banks; people with rare blood group may face no problems looking for the right blood donor in emergency situations.
Scientists from the National Defense Medical College have developed artificial blood which could be transfused into any patient – regardless of their blood type.
Blood is a vital fluid that absorbs oxygen from the lungs and transports the oxygen throughout the body, and it also removes waste carbon dioxide from the cells. Japanese scientists have created blood complete with oxygen carrying red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets, which ensure that the blood can clot and heal over time.
Manabu Kinoshita, associate professor of immunology at the National Defense Medical College and co-author of the paper, said, “It is difficult to stock a sufficient amount of blood for transfusions in such regions as remote islands,” “The artificial blood will be able to save the lives of people who otherwise could not be saved.”
The team has successfully tested the blood in rabbits. They tested blood on 10 rabbits with severe blood loss, six survived.
Life saver
This revolutionary research will be a blessing especially for the remote areas. Many lives will be saved. As with artificial blood there is no need to check the blood type, it could also be used to treat patients before they even arrive at the hospital.
