Traditional 3D printers are great for mass customization but are still too slow and expensive.
Now, a Massachusetts-based company called Desktop Metal (DM) is set to change the future of 3D printing with its 3D metal printing system, which is much faster, safer, and affordable.
The company is creating two new 3D printers: the DM Studio and DM Production. The first aims to provide faster and cheaper metal prototyping for engineering groups, and the second serves as a production system for mass manufacture.
At the low end of the market, commercially available desktop 3D printers can only use low-quality ABS plastics. And while organizations like NASA and Boeing use laser-melted metal printing, the process is slow and expensive.
The DM Studio System is capable of using a variety of metals and alloys, including steel, aluminum, copper, and titanium. It does not require hazardous metal powders, unsafe cutting tools, or any complex lasers.
Desktop Metal’s Studio machines are up to 100 times faster than a conventional alternative. It is also 10 times less expensive with material costs that are 20 times cheaper.
Lately, the company has gained a lot of attention, with big players like Google Ventures making investments in the company.
