The U.S. Air Force is offering $2 million prize to any research team that can design the next generation jet engines to boost U.S. air power.
The prize money for the ‘Air Force Prize’ will go to any U.S. resident, corporation, or research institute that builds a new turbine engine meeting the Air Force’s specifications.
The AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory) has laid out challenging criteria for participants:
- The lightweight and fuel-efficient turbine engine must be in the 100 horsepower class.
- The power-to-weight ratio should be at least 2.0 horsepower per pound.
- The engine is required to have a brake-horsepower specific fuel consumption of 0.55 pounds of fuel per horsepower per hour.
- The engine must pass the same 6-hour test two times.
These requirements will help the U.S. Air Force to double the fuel efficiency of their existing turbine engines with 10 times the lifespan.
If the Air Force chooses your design, you will not only get $2 million in prize money, but you will also get to keep the rights to the design.
