Tokyo-based Suntory, a brewing and distillery company, is reportedly sending six samples of its whiskeys and other alcohols to the International Space Station this month.
Suntory, which produces the Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013, named the best whiskey in the world last year, plans to study the effects of zero-gravity on the aging process.
A 21-year-old single malt and another drink that has just been distilled will be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on August 16th, where it will eventually arrive at the Japanese Experiment Module aboard the ISS.
Suntory believes a zero-gravity, temperature-stable environment will affect the “mellowness” of their drinks as they age, and will receive their first sample of the experiment one year after being sent to outer space.
Certain samples will stay on the ISS for as long as two years.
