To celebrate outstanding ideas for vertical living, eVolo magazine has been holding an annual contest since 2006. eVolo receives thousands of projects from all over the world for this competition. The winning entries are selected for their creativity, aesthetics, innovation in technology, and materials used.
eVolo Magazine Has Announced the Winners of the 2015 Skyscraper Competition
This year, three winners were selected from hundreds of entries for their concepts challenging the current understanding of vertical architecture.
Second place was awarded to Suraksha Bhatla and Sharan Sundar from India for the project Shanty-Scaper.
Rapid urbanization, scarcity of urban land and increasing rural to urban shift has led to a surge in the slum population in the mega cities of India.
The Shanty-Scraper aims to provide housing, work and recreational spaces to the slum dwellers living in the south Indian city of Chennai, which has the third largest slum dwelling amongst India’s largest cities.
The Shanty-Scraper structure is mainly comprised of city’s post-construction debris like pipes, metal sheets, cardboard, timber and thatch. The tower can help combat the slum’s urban sprawl by providing vertical shelter to a number of slum dwellers at minimal cost.
