Architects at NBBJ in London have designed shadowless skyscrapers in an effort to allow people to enjoy more sunlight throughout the city.
The newly envisioned “No Shadow Tower” will consist of two skyscrapers built side by side with special windows that reflect natural sunlight in order to not cast a shadow.
One of the buildings will act as a massive curved mirror whose sole purpose is to reflect sunlight down onto the shadow cast by the other building. The reflected light will be able to follow the shadows as they move through the day.
“The relationship between the sun and shadow is the relationship between the two buildings,” says Christian Coop, design director for NBBJ.
It is important to note that the reflected light will not burn humans and animals in the general vicinity of the shadowless skyscrapers, as the sunlight is being diffused versus used as a tool to spark fires.
The unique design created by NBBJ, by way of a software called Rhinoceros, is expected to reduce up to 60% of shade, a major accomplishment for a pair of buildings that will also be very structurally sound.
