All battery-based chargers need to be plugged into a wall socket to gain a charge. But this portable charger will allow users to live ‘off grid’.
A German startup, eZelleron Inc., has developed a hand-held portable generator, ‘Kraftwerk,’ that runs entirely on fuel cell technology.
Kraftwerk, which means “power station” in German, doesn’t need to be connected to a power outlet. But it can provide weeks of uninterrupted power to your smartphones and other portable electronic devices.
How It Works
Measuring just 3 x 4 inches and 1.18 inches thick, this hand-held tiny power plant converts the conveniently available standard lighter gas, or butane, into electricity via an internal fuel cell.
To produce electricity, the fuel cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy. It delivers continuous output of 2 watts with a peak power output of 10 watts.
Just one charge of gas provides enough energy to charge an iPhone about 11 times. The gas can be refilled in just three seconds.
Kraftwerk will be ready for shipping by February 2016, with an estimated retail price of $149.
