China’s Harbin Institute of Technology is behind an effort to develop a submarine faster than the speed of sound.
The sub would be able to travel at an incredible 3600 mph by utilizing super-cavitation technology, developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Essentially watercraft have to deal with friction, unlike plane, so the technology creates an air-bubble so-to-speak in the water in order to eliminate friction and allow the submarine to travel extremely fast under water.
The technology has already been tested on unmanned torpedoes with great results and blistering speeds.
Could you imagine a submarine moving at 3600 mph?! The speed of sound is around 760 mph for perspective…
