Taking pictures and videos. Texting. Keeping up with the world through social media. Talking to your friends. Buying the things you want. Playing games. Our phones can handle just about everything we need these days.
But all of those uses we have for our phone are a major drain on the battery. And you’re usually miles away from your charger when that low battery indicator starts bugging you.
A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology wants to solve that problem. They’ve developed a way to charge your phone by just being in a room equipped with a powerful, long range wireless charging system. They call the set up a Dipole Coil Resonant System (DCRS).
About DCRS: The system consists of two 10-foot long boxes made up of compact ferrite core rods with coils of wire in the middle. One of the boxes generates a magnetic field, while the other induces the voltage.
It effectively generates wireless electricity up to 5 meters (15 feet) between transmitter and receiver coils. The setup can charge 40 cellphones simultaneously and larger devices like portable TVs and laptops.
In the near future, just like Wi-Fi zones, there will be ‘Wi-Power’ zones that will provide electric power wirelessly to electronic devices.
