A brand new self-healing plastic has been created through a technique that is both mechanical and chemical.
The plastic consists of “veins” like the human circulatory system that are filled with different liquids, or monomers. Once damaged or ruptured, the veins break open and different liquids mix in order to set off a chemical reaction that results in a gel and then a reaction where the plastic heals/hardens up again.
The self-healing plastic can repair holes upwards of 3 centimeters (1.18 inches) in diameter. Not to mention upon repair, the plastic regains most of its original strength back.
While the plastic has yet to be tested outside of a lab, let your imagination run wild on the potential real-world application of a product of this magnitude.
