This week, the Micro 3D printer, dubbed the “affordable 3D printer”, set some crowdfunding records by smashing its $50,000 target on Kickstarter in about 11 minutes. Before we knew it, the project had hit over a million dollars in pledges.
One of the biggest issues facing 3D printers and getting one into every home is the price. A Micro printer can go for as low as $200 but most of these models have already been snapped up.
“We hope this will allow for faster production and better leverage in manufacturing! Thanks for your support!” M3D, the company behind the printer, said on Twitter. The printer is intended for beginners and experts alike with quick usability out of the box. According to the manufacturers, the Micro 3D Printer is made “to be as interactive and enjoyable as a game, making sure it’s fully touchscreen-capable with a minimalist and simple-to-use interface.”
M3D set up a “Super Early Bird Adopter” level for the first 250 supporters on the company’s Kickstarter page. Those lucky contributors chipped in $199 to get their own Micro 3D.
After the makers’ overwhelming success on Kickstarter, the Micro 3D printer is expected to start shipping late this year or early 2015.
