The Touch Bionics i-limb is an incredible revolution in the prosthetic hand industry, using muscle movements to activate pre-programmed hand and finger motions in the robotic hand.
Moreover, the hand can spin around 360 degrees and has tensile strength so that it will shake hands with a normal amount of strength, not too hard and not too soft.
How Does It Work?
The intuitive movements of the $100K i-limb are made possible by myoelectric prosthesis, which essentially uses electrical sensors to detect even the smallest of muscular movements in the limb in order to relay natural motions of the human hand.
Colonel Geoffrey Ling of DARPA’s Defense Science department recently said, “Upper extremity limb replacement has not really progressed since the days of Captain Hook.”
I would venture to say the i-limb is giant step in the future of upper extremity limb replacement and that affordability will be key in making this product a mainstay in society.
