For the past 24 years, different artists and designers have developed the IceHotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. Constructed afresh in November every year, this hotel is open between December and mid April.
Various artists are selected to create different themed rooms in the IceHotel, allowing visitors to spend the night in sub-zero temperatures. This year, French design studio Les Ateliers de Germaine has created one of the suites at this IceHotel. The suite features Parisian rooftops carved out of blocks of ice, based on Montmartre, one of Paris’ most well-known areas. The temporary suite offers a trip to one of Paris’ historical districts and transforms it into a 3D postcard from France.
The hotel is located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle; it is the largest hotel in the world made of snow and ice. Every November, handpicked artists from around the world come together to create pieces of art.
Working in extreme weather conditions is a challenge for these artists. If the room is warm, snow can be wet and sticky. At other times if it is too cold, the ice can start to crack and be very fragile.
