The Crystal Lagoon at San Alfonso del Mar Resort in Chile is home to the world’s largest outdoor pool. The pool, developed by Chilean company Crystal Lagoons, holds the Guinness World Record for the largest and deepest pool.
Water for the pool is drawn from the ocean. It makes use of a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to suck water in from the ocean at one end and cleans it while motors pump it out at the other end.
• Estimated total cost of construction of this pool is about $1.5 to 2 billion USD and after nearly five years of construction work the pool was opened in December 2006.
• The pool is more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres and has a 115-foot deep end.
• It holds 66 million gallons of crystal clear seawater.
• The annual cost of maintenance is about $2 million USD.
• The pool is more than twice the length of the next biggest outdoor pool and is large enough for sailing.
• The pool is beautiful with its turquoise crystal clear water. It is so clear that you can see the bottom even at the deep end.
