Universal Serial Bus, or the name we all are familiar with ‘USB’, is an industry standard that defines the cables, connectors and adapters used to supply power and connecting computers and electronic devices. For years, the connection has looked the same and we’ve all felt foolish at some point trying to stick a USB cord in upside down.
Now, a biggest technological advancement will ensure a USB standard that all PC and Smartphone manufacturers can adopt for a single cable solution. You no longer have to worry which side should be facing upward when plugging it into an electronic device.
USB 3.0 Promoter Group recently announced a next-generation USB ‘Type-C’ connector, which can be plugged in both ways, is now finally ready for production. The Type-C connector is almost the same size as the existing Micro-USB connector of your Smartphone but it is reversible.
Here are some of its advantages:
Speed – USB Type-C standard has a maximum transfer speed 10Gbps…double of what is possible today.
Power – Its power delivery of up to 100W is more than enough to charge your laptops and smartphones much faster.
Reversible – If you plug in the Type-C connector one way, the top set of pins is used. If it is plugged in the other way, the bottom set of pins are used which makes it reversible.
The USB Type-C connector will not be compatible with existing USB versions, though. You will need an adaptor to use it or it can be used on the devices that support it, of course.
