SpaceX has announced it will open its commercial rocket launch facility in the greater Brownsville area of Texas, the most impoverished area in America.
SpaceX has been negotiating with Texas officials for over two years, the state recently agreed to put $15.3 million into the endeavor, $13 million of which will go directly to funding the proper infrastructure.
Estimates are that the launch facility will bring $85 million in capital investment to Brownsville and create 300 new jobs, potentially 500 jobs over the next decade.
Governor Perry said in a statement, “Texas has been on the forefront of our nation’s space exploration efforts for decades, so it is fitting that SpaceX has chosen our state as they expand the frontiers of commercial space flight.”
